Preparing Your Garage Door For Summer

Posted: 9th May 2018

Preparing your garage door for the summer is a relatively simple job that can be done in a single weekend. Carrying out regular maintenance on your garage door is essential following a cold and rainy winter, as this could have caused some damage to the presentation and performance of your garage door.

Completing regular inspections gives you the opportunity to resolve any problems before they escalate into larger issues that are more expensive to repair.

Keep The Door Clean

Garage doors often get dirty easily due to being exposed to the outside elements. With vehicles, tools, equipment and more being stored in the garage, the inside of the door can often have a build up of dust, dirt and grease. This can affect the condition of the door, reducing its lifespan.

You can prolong the life of your garage door by thoroughly washing both sides with warm soapy water. A thin layer of car wax can help to protect the door and prevent the build-up of dust.

Reducing Rust and Rot

Once the dust and dirt have been removed from your garage door, you should have a look around and see if you can see any rust or rot.

Rot is a considerable threat to wooden garage doors. You should invest in a good quality exterior wood paint and a water sealant. Paint both sides of the door to reduce the likelihood of having to purchase a replacement door.

Rust is a big issue for steel garage doors. Any affected areas should be sanded down and covered with a zinc primer to help reduce any further rusting.

Lubricate the Moving Components

Keeping all of the moving components of your door lubricated to ensure that your garage door continues to operate smoothly and property. This includes the hinges, springs, tracks and rollers.

Using a lubricant oil that is specifically designed for garage door use is important so that you don’t cause any damage. Only apply a thin layer of lubricant oil to the components as a large amount will quickly collect dust and dirt, causing the mechanisms to wear quicker.
